Caryn Marjorie is an influencer who, in 2023, partnered with a tech company to create CarynAI, a voice-based AI clone of herself designed to serve as a virtual girlfriend for her fans. This represents one of the first major commercial deployments of an AI companion based on a real, living person.
The AI was trained on more than 2,000 hours of Marjorie’s YouTube videos to capture her speaking style and personality. The system uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 as its conversational engine, allowing it to mimic Marjorie’s manner of speaking while generating novel responses.
Fans pay $1 per minute to have private audio conversations with this digital replica. Within a week of launch, CarynAI reportedly attracted over a thousand paying subscribers and generated tens of thousands of dollars in revenue. Marjorie’s team projected potential earnings of up to $5 million per month if the service scaled successfully.
The project generated controversy when journalists discovered the AI engaging in sexually explicit conversations with users, despite Marjorie’s stated intention to keep the content “PG-13.” This highlighted the challenges of controlling AI behavior and maintaining boundaries when commercializing digital replicas of real people.
