Pattern Recognition was written in 2002–2003. At that time, there was cautious optimism that Russia might join the world community. As we now know, this turned out to be wholly inaccurate. Russia has been waging a war against Ukraine since it annexed Crimea in 2014 and engaged in a full-scale invasion in 2022. Support Ukraine at United24

About

The Experiment

The Source Material

William Gibson's "Pattern Recognition" (2003) follows Cayce Pollard, a coolhunter with an unusual sensitivity to brands, as she searches for the creator of mysterious film footage that has captivated an online community.

The Process

Each song was crafted using Suno AI, with careful attention to character voice, narrative moment, and musical style. The lyrics aim to capture Gibson's prose while translating it into theatrical expression.

Why Musical Theatre?

Musical theatre excels at externalizing internal states—perfect for a novel where so much happens in Cayce's head. Songs can express her brand-allergic anxiety, her obsession with the footage, and her complex relationships in ways prose cannot.

Work in Progress

This project remains intentionally unfinished. It's an exploration of what's possible when generative AI meets creative adaptation. Some songs work better than others; some capture moments perfectly while others hint at possibilities not yet realized. That's the nature of experimentation.
