Unity AR Capture Pipeline: A Four-Month Rebuild

The challenge

In 2019, a major automotive client had a problem: their white-labelled AR walk-around scanning platform was being discontinued by the vendor. The system let customers explore vehicles in augmented reality — walking around a car, examining details from any angle — and it was integrated into their customer-facing product. Losing it meant losing a key differentiator.

They needed the entire capture pipeline rebuilt from scratch, and they needed it fast. The contract deadline was four months out.

The approach

Far Horizons took the project from brief to shipped application in four months. The rebuild covered the full stack:

  • A custom Unity-based capture pipeline that replaced the deprecated vendor solution with a system we controlled end-to-end
  • Android and iOS applications for the walk-around scanning workflow — operators in the field could capture vehicles using mobile devices
  • A desktop QA suite that let the team review, validate, and approve captured scans before they went live
  • Integration with the client’s existing systems so the new pipeline dropped into the same workflows without disrupting operations

The approach relied on systematic rapid prototyping to build confidence early. Rather than disappearing for three months and delivering a finished product, we demonstrated working components incrementally — proving each piece of the pipeline functioned before moving to the next. By the time the full system came together, every component had already been validated.

The results

  • Shipped four weeks ahead of the contract deadline — from brief to production-ready in under four months

  • System the client’s team could operate and maintain independently

The takeaway

When a critical system fails and the timeline is tight, what matters is the ability to execute — not the ability to plan. Four months from brief to shipped app required a practitioner who could make architecture decisions and write production code, not a team that needed weeks of discovery before writing a line. The same principle applies to any rescue project: reduce the distance between decision and execution.
